Midjourney To Launch A New Device

Midjourney, renowned for its powerful AI image-generation tool, has publicly revealed its foray into the hardware domain, inviting job applicants to join its new hardware division.

Midjourney Teases A New Hardware

Midjourney’s founder, David Holz, previously held a CTO position at Leap Motion, a hardware company. Holz has recently hired Ahmad Abbas, who previously worked with him at Leap Motion and spent five years at Apple as a hardware manager, contributing to the Vision Pro headset. Abbas is now listed as the “Head of Hardware” at Midjourney.

The details about Midjourney’s upcoming device remain unclear, but the company’s Twitter account has shared some hints that could provide insights into its plans.

For instance, it has stated that the device will not be a pendant, in light of the recent failures of similar AI hardware devices.

Midjourney also mentioned having “multiple efforts in flight” and noted the potential for “more form factors,” suggesting they are exploring various design options.

Holz had previously tweeted about creating a spherical device inspired by fantasy wizards’ orbs, like Saruman’s palantír from The Lord of the Rings, in response to a fellow X user’s joke.

Both Midjourney and Holz have been prolific on X with teases and trolls about it, so their statements shouldn’t be taken too seriously beyond a general commitment to produce some kind of hardware.

There’s no timeline for when this might happen, and Midjourney is just one of many companies exploring AI-driven hardware.
