Instagram Has Launched A New AI Video Editor

Instagram has introduced a new AI video editing app called Edits, designed to compete with CapCut, which is linked to TikTok. Announced in January, Edits is now available for free on both iOS and Android.

The app is aimed at content creators and offers tools for managing projects, tracking ideas, and analyzing video performance. It also includes advanced editing features not found in the main Instagram app, such as AI-generated animations from still images, green screen effects, and subject cutouts.

Edits shares many features with CapCut, a video editing app developed by TikTok’s parent company, ByteDance. The announcement of Edits coincided with a brief period when TikTok and CapCut were unavailable in US app stores, suggesting that Meta views CapCut as a key competitor.

When Edits was first introduced, Instagram head Adam Mosseri acknowledged the similarities between the two apps but stated on Threads that Edits would cater more to creators than casual users. He also mentioned that it would ultimately be quite different from CapCut, offering a wider array of creative tools but likely serving a smaller audience.

Instagram is already hinting at upcoming features for Edits, including keyframe support, additional AI editing options, and collaborative video creation with other users.
