Meta is enabling anyone in the US to create AI versions of themselves on Instagram or the web through a new tool called AI Studio.
Creators and business owners can use these AI profiles to communicate with their followers on their behalf, engaging in chat threads and responding to comments on their accounts.
Users in the US can access AI Studio through Meta’s website or by starting a new “AI chat” directly on Instagram.
Creators can customize their AI based on their Instagram content, topics to avoid, and links they want it to share. They can also activate features like auto-replies and specify which accounts the AI is allowed to interact with.
AI Studio enables the creation of entirely new AI characters that can be deployed across Meta’s apps.
Here, Meta is competing with startups like Character.AI and Replika, where people already converse with and even develop feelings for themed chatbots.
Similar to OpenAI’s custom GPT Store, Meta will also surface the AI characters people create for others to try.
Meta’s initial approach was to have a few celebrities create AI versions of themselves with the same appearance but different names and personas.
At the time, Meta expressed concern about AI versions of celebrities saying problematic things on behalf of their human counterparts. Even with the controls built into AI Studio, this is still likely to occur, as it is generative AI we are dealing with.
Meta appears to recognize the delicate nature of this domain. The company states that AI profiles are prominently labeled across all instances.
A handbook for creators provides further details on the AI creation process, indicating that the onus lies on the creator to specify the topics an AI will refrain from addressing. One example provided by Meta is the query “Should I invest in crypto??”
