BuzzFeed Gears Up to Unveil a New Social Media Platform

BuzzFeed is planning to launch a new social media platform aimed at spreading joy and encouraging fun creativity.

In a blog post, co-founder and CEO Jonah Peretti mentioned that many people are unhappy with current platforms that use AI to keep users engaged. He stated that BuzzFeed’s new network will use AI to empower users instead of controlling them.

The new platform aims to be a refreshing alternative to the usual doomscrolling that many social media sites encourage. It will focus on providing quirky and enjoyable experiences to make the internet a fun place again.

Peretti explained the reasons behind creating this platform. He criticized companies like Meta and TikTok for letting AI algorithms dictate content instead of relying on human judgment. This results in content that often triggers the strongest reactions from viewers.

He introduced a concept he calls “SNARF,” which stands for Stakes, Novelty, Anger, Retention, and Fear. He explained how content creators often exaggerate stakes to make things seem urgent, create false novelty to make content seem unique, stir up anger to boost engagement, withhold information to keep viewers hooked, and use fear to grab attention.

BuzzFeed, which also owns HuffPost and Tasty, aims to change the addictive nature of social media by producing content that promotes enjoyment and connection with friends. They are also launching their own social media platform.

Peretti emphasized, “We want to create an alternative.” He believes social media should encourage creativity and connections rather than addiction. This initiative isn’t just about improving BuzzFeed, but about rethinking the internet to be a place where everyone can connect and express themselves.
