At CES 2025, the popular VLC video player was showcased with an exciting new feature that offers automatic AI-generated subtitles and translations.
This functionality works locally on your device and does not require an internet connection. VideoLAN’s president, Jean-Baptiste Kempf, introduced this feature in a video, explaining how it utilizes open-source AI models to create subtitles in various languages.
Kempf highlighted that the tool can automatically translate subtitles into your preferred language, with plans to support over 100 languages.
He pointed out that this process occurs directly on your machine, offline, and does not rely on cloud services, functioning entirely within the VLC application.
The development of AI-based subtitling has been ongoing, initially available as a plug-in that used OpenAI’s Whisper for speech recognition.
However, this latest demonstration seems to integrate the feature directly into the VLC software, allowing for real-time subtitle translation.
This week, VideoLAN celebrated reaching an impressive milestone of 6 billion downloads. Kempf proudly noted that the number of active VLC users continues to rise, even as streaming services become more popular.
As CES 2025 continues, we look forward to finding VideoLAN at the event to witness the AI subtitling feature in action.
