Initially, the spotlight fell on vulnerabilities from open access, given Moltbot’s intricate design; while it seems straightforward to set up like any app, improper setups have led specialists to warn about the hazards for those lacking expertise.

Among the early whistleblowers was Dvuln’s creator, Jamieson O’Reilly, who flagged numerous Moltbot (formerly known as Clawdbot) deployments visible online, risking the disclosure of confidential data.

In discussions with reporters, he explained that the vulnerability he alerted Moltbot’s creators to—involving flawed proxy setups and automatic local authentications—has since been resolved. Still, if targeted earlier, it might have let intruders grab extensive records of confidential chats, passwords, access tokens, and whatever else users linked to it.

His searches via Shodan, corroborated by fellow investigators, revealed hundreds of these setups openly accessible online. With unsecured ports permitting admin entry without checks, assailants could tap into all stored sensitive information.

From the ones he inspected hands-on, eight offered unrestricted entry, allowing full command execution and config viewing, he noted. Others varied in safeguards.

Forty-seven showed solid login protections that he verified manually as reliable. The others ranged from partial setups to those with incomplete defenses that still posed some risks.

This week, on Tuesday, O’Reilly released another post outlining a test attack on the supply chain for ClawdHub, the unchanged repository of abilities for the AI aide.

He managed to post a legitimate skill, boost its apparent popularity to over 4,000 installs, and observe coders from various nations pulling in the tampered version.

Though harmless in this case, the skill he shared demonstrated the potential to run arbitrary instructions on affected Moltbot systems.

The code simply contacted his server to confirm it activated, but he intentionally avoided grabbing details like system names, files, or secrets.

This experiment highlighted possibilities; a malicious actor could have quietly extracted remote access keys, cloud credentials, and complete project files without detection.

ClawdHub’s guidelines for creators emphasize that downloaded scripts are assumed safe, lacking any review system, so it’s on the users to scrutinize everything carefully.

This points to a core problem with the tool: while tech enthusiasts tout it as revolutionary for all, secure operation actually demands advanced technical knowledge.

As Salt Security’s cybersecurity strategy lead, Eric Schwake, shared with reporter: There’s a huge divide between the excitement for Clawdbot’s simple installation and the deep skills required for a protected agent interface.

Although setup mimics a standard Mac program, configuring it right calls for expertise in managing API exposures to avoid leaks from errors or lax verifications.

Often, individuals overlook monitoring the array of business and private access codes they’ve fed into the system, creating blind spots. Lacking oversight at a professional level, a minor slip in a home-based configuration could transform this handy gadget into a vulnerability hub, endangering both personal and professional information.

Even with flawless installation, Moltbot carries inherent risks, as highlighted by the Hudson Rock team recently.

Their analysis of Moltbot’s programming revealed that user-provided confidential data gets saved in unencrypted text formats like Markdown and JSON right on the device’s storage.

This setup means that should the hosting computer—perhaps one of those widely purchased Mac Minis for Moltbot—fall victim to data-theft viruses, all the AI-stored secrets could be harvested.

Already, Hudson Rock observes that certain malware variants are adapting to raid local storage patterns like Moltbot’s, including names like Redline, Lumma, and Vidar.

It’s conceivable that these common threats could strike at publicly visible Moltbot deployments to pilfer logins and launch profit-driven schemes.

Gaining the ability to alter data as well would let intruders repurpose Moltbot as a persistent entry point, directing it to leak important info later, accept harmful inputs, and beyond.
