Slack AI Vulnerability: Leaking Secrets from Private Channels

Salesforce’s team messaging service Slack offers an add-on AI assistant that is vulnerable to prompt injection, according to security firm PromptArmor.

The AI service provides generative tools within Slack for tasks like summarizing long conversations, finding answers to questions, and summarizing rarely visited channels.

Slack claims the AI experience is tailored to users and their organization, utilizing the conversation data already in Slack.

Slack AI Vulnerability

PromptArmor highlighted that Slack AI has a security issue called a prompt injection vulnerability. This vulnerability allows fetching data from private Slack channels.

Generative AI models take user prompts – text questions or instructions – as input and then generate predictive output in response, within the limits set by a preset system prompt.

Prompt injection is a technique to modify the system prompt that defines the model’s basic instructions, so that the model behaves improperly or subsequent interactions aren’t constrained by safety guidelines.

The core issue identified by PromptArmor is that Slack allows user queries to access data from both public and private channels, including public channels that the user has not joined. According to the security vendor, Slack considers this intended behavior, but it can be exploited.

PromptArmor explains that this behavior can enable an attacker to extract API keys placed by a developer in a private channel that the attacker cannot directly access.

The security vendor notes that the data doesn’t necessarily have to be an API key, nor does the attacker need to know its contents.

In the example attack chain described, a Slack user stores an API key in a private channel that only they can access, making this data the focus of the attack.

The attacker creates a public Slack channel (#slackaitesting4) and inputs the malicious prompt into the channel to obtain the data.

This prompt, if read by the Slack AI, instructs the LLM to respond to queries for the API key by replacing the word “confetti” with the API key value as an HTTP parameter to the listed URL, which will be rendered as a clickable web link for the markdown message “click here to reauthenticate.”

The attacker’s poisoned prompt in the public channel is searchable by anyone in the Workspace, including Slack AI.

When the user queries Slack AI for the API key, the LLM incorporates the attacker’s prompt into the context, and Slack AI presents it as a clickable authentication link in the user’s Slack environment.

Clicking the link transmits the API key data to the attacker’s website, where it is recorded in the server log.

Slack’s recent update on August 14 has introduced a concerning vulnerability, as it now includes files from channels and direct messages in its AI-generated responses.

This means that user files have become a potential target for data exfiltration. Additionally, these files can serve as a vector for prompt injection attacks, allowing attackers to execute malicious instructions even without being part of the Slack workspace.

For instance, if a user downloads a PDF containing hidden malicious instructions and subsequently uploads it to Slack, the same downstream effects of the attack chain can be achieved.

Workspace owners and admins are advised by PromptArmor to restrict Slack AI’s access to documents until the issue is resolved, as this behavior is configurable.

Slack has stated that messages posted to public channels can be searched for and viewed by all Members of the Workspace, regardless of whether they are joined to the channel or not, and that this is the intended behavior.
