It was compiled by two nonprofit organizations, the Midas Project and the Tech Oversight Project, focusing on accountability within the tech industry.

In November 2023, he was removed from his position by OpenAI’s nonprofit board but was reinstated after a tumultuous week that involved a large employee protest and a brief role at Microsoft.
His removal was linked to concerns over his leadership style and communication with the board, especially about AI safety. Reports indicate that several executives, including Mira Murati and Ilya Sutskever, questioned Altman’s capability to lead effectively.
According to an article by Karen Hao in The Atlantic, Murati expressed discomfort with Altman leading the charge toward artificial general intelligence (AGI), while Sutskever stated that he did not believe Altman should be in control of AGI development.
Dario and Daniela Amodei, who previously held senior positions at OpenAI, also voiced criticisms of the organization and Altman after their departures in 2020.
They described Altman’s management style as manipulative and harmful, with Dario later co-founding the competing AI company Anthropic.
Other notable figures, like Jan Leike, a former co-lead of OpenAI’s superalignment team, have publicly criticized the organization. After leaving for Anthropic in early 2024, Leike claimed that OpenAI had prioritized flashy products over safety protocols.
The report arrives at a pivotal moment for OpenAI, which is attempting to transition from its original capped-profit model to a more profit-driven structure.
Currently, the nonprofit board fully controls OpenAI, adhering to its mission of ensuring AI benefits all of humanity, leading to conflicts between the for-profit side and the nonprofit leadership.
Initially, OpenAI planned to become an independent for-profit entity, but that plan was abandoned in May. Instead, the organization will evolve its for-profit division into a public benefit corporation under the nonprofit’s control.
