Andy Booth tweeted this morning about AI.com and asked if OpenAI had acquired the domain name. Andy probably asked this question because the domain name AI.com is now redirecting to ChatGPT, a popular AI chatbot.
Future Media Architects (FMA) has owned AI.com for a long time. Saw.com brokered the deal, representing FMA for many years on domain name sales.
Jeff, Founder and CEO of Saw, replied to our question and confirmed that FMA had sold AI.com. The purchase price of AI.com was worth $11 million. Jeff said it was sold to “someone in the NFT space.” He added that he was happy for both the buyer and seller.
OpenAI’s ChatGPT chatbot is one of the most popular startups. It would be interesting to find out if Saw arranged the sale of AI.com for someone connected with OpenAI or if the domain purchaser in September 2021 resold the domain to someone affiliated with OpenAI.
The company raised a lot of money and is valued at a high level. A category-defining asset such as AI.com would signify dominance in the burgeoning field of artificial intelligence.
