John Carmack, the consulting CTO of Meta's virtual reality efforts, has resigned, according to two sources who have been in touch with the company.

His departure was announced on Friday, sources told. Carmack was vocally critical of Meta's advances regarding AR and VR, which are fundamental to its metaverse goals, and posted to Meta's internal Workplace forum regarding his decision to quit.

"We have built something close to being the correct thing," Carmack said in the memo, as read by Insider. "The problem is the effectiveness."

In the end, Carmack said he simply "wearied of the war" with Meta, which was formerly called Facebook that purchased Oculus in 2014.
