US Army Apache Choppers Get New Laser Protection System

Its AH-64E Apache attack helicopters have been fitted with a laser-protection system to protect against short-range heat-seeking missiles.

It is known as"the Common Infrared Countermeasures (CIRCM). This new system defends against surface-to-air missiles and man-portable defence systems (MANPADS).

The CIRCM began full-rate production in 2021. It was operational in November 2022.

The US Army initially planned to install the system on CH-47F Chinook heavy-lift helicopters.

However, photographs revealed Apaches were equipped with a laser security system.

According to various reports, an ongoing Russian invasion of Ukraine caused the US to incorporate the defence system in the Boeing-built aircraft.

Washington has been reported to have seen MANPADS coming from Kyiv effectively neutralizing the low-flying Russian drones, helicopters and drones as well as the Ka-52 Alligators.

CIRCM from Northrop Grumman's CIRCM has been designed to incorporate defensive infrared countermeasures to the existing military aircraft.

It is comprised of a pointer-tracker unit, an infrared laser and a system processor unit to effectively track targets that are coming in.
