The U.S. government's cybersecurity agency has warned that a group of criminally motivated hackers has compromised federal agencies with authentic remote desktop programs.

CISA said in a joint advisory with the National Security Agency on Wednesday that it had identified a “widespread cyber campaign involving the malicious use of legitimate remote monitoring and management (RMM) software”

It had targeted multiple federal civilian executive branch agencies — known as FCEBs — a list that includes Homeland Security, the Treasury and the Justice Department.

CISA stated that it first discovered suspicious, malicious activities within two FCEB systems in October while performing a retrospective analysis with Einstein, an intrusion detection system to protect Federal civilian agencies' networks.

Further analysis realized that other networks of government were affected.

CISA identified this as a phishing scheme that was financially motivated and was first discovered by security company Silent Push.
