United States Declares Monkeypox A Public Health Emergency

Scribbled Arrow

The monkeypox epidemic is an emergency for public health across the United States, Xavier Becerra, Secretary of Health and human services, stated today.

The virus has been spreading across the US since May, and cases are increasing worldwide.

"We encourage all American to consider taking monkeypox seriously," he said in the briefing for journalists today.

A decision to declare an emergency in public health follows the declaration of the World Health Organization in the latter part of July.

Many states, such as New York and California, have also declared health emergencies.

An emergency in public health opens the door to funding for disease response.

It may help speed up access to available treatments for this painful condition.

Monkeypox vaccines are already in use nationwide; however, they're in short supply.

"This public health crisis will enable us to investigate various strategies to get treatments and vaccines faster to affected communities.

It will also enable us to collect more information from the jurisdictions so that we can efficiently identify and fight this epidemic," said Robert Fenton,
