TikTok Is Fastest Growing News Source For UK Adults - Survey

A survey of the news consumption patterns has revealed that TikTok is the fastest-growing news source among people in the UK. 

Based on a study by UK regulator Ofcom, The application is currently being utilized by 7 per cent of UK adults as a news source as opposed to just 1 per cent in 2020.

The study is further evidence of the app's growing popularity in the digital realm. It demonstrates how it is fast becoming the go-to resource for information and entertainment. 

In the US, For instance, it was estimated that 40% of Gen Z (individuals born between 1997 and 2012) 1997 and 2012) utilize one or the other, TikTok or Instagram, for their simple search for information such as restaurants, etc., in contrast to previous search engines such as Google Search and Maps.

While TikTok has seen rapid growth as a news site in the UK, it's the sixth most popular site for those between the ages of 16 and 24 (where it's utilized for 27 per cent of those).

In the 12 to 15-year young people, the tendency to social media news is higher. The top three media sources in this age group include Instagram (29 per cent), YouTube, and TikTok (29 per cent). 

"Teenagers nowadays are less likely to open newspapers or watch television news, choosing to stay informed by browsing their social media feeds," said Yih-Choung, The Director of Ofcom's group for strategy and research.

"And although young people consider news from social media not as reliable, they are rated higher in their ability to provide a variety of perspectives on the most important news stories."
