NASA's Artemis 1 test flight will be joined by Shaun the Sheep, on its journey to the Moon.

On Tuesday, the European Space Agency (ESA) announced that Shaun the Sheep would join the uncrewed mission.

It is expected to take off later in the year.

The announcement means that Aardman's favourite character will become the first ESA astronaut in the Artemis program.

David Parker, ESA Director for Human and Robotic Exploration, stated, "This is a thrilling time for Shaun and us at ESA."

We are woolly happy for him to be selected for this mission. Although it may seem small for humans, it is a massive leap for lambkins.

NASA has confirmed that Artemis 1 will launch within the next few days after a successful fueling test for its next-generation SLS rocket.

The capsule will return to Earth in 39 to 42 days if all goes according to plan.

The ESA stated that the spacecraft would fly by the Moon using lunar gravity to accelerate and propel itself 70,000km beyond the Moon.
