NASA Shocked With This New Discovery That Aged Early By Sun

Recently, NASA's OSIRIS-REx spacecraft discovered that surface regeneration takes place on asteroids much faster than on Earth. 

Analyzing high-resolution images of the fractures of rocks on the asteroid Bennu that were captured by the OSIRIS REx spacecraft

Scientists discovered that the sun's radiation fractures the rocks on Bennu within 10,000 and 100,000 years. 

Based on this information, researchers can better estimate the time it takes stones on asteroids like Bennu to split into smaller pieces. 

Some could be released into space, while others remain on the asteroid's surface.

While tens of thousands of years may sound fast, "we thought surface regeneration on asteroids would take a few millions of years to complete," stated Marco Delbo, senior scientist at Universite Cote d'Azur, CNRS. 

"We were astonished to discover that the process of weathering and ageing on asteroids occurs so quickly in a geological sense."
