How To Apply For $725 Million Facebook Data Privacy Settlement
TRENDING GLOBALLY
Facebook users can apply to receive a part of Meta's $725 million settlement related to the Cambridge Analytica scandal.
The settlement was agreed upon by Meta in December to settle a class action lawsuit accusing it of allowing Cambridge Analytica and other third parties to access private user information and misleading users about its privacy practices.
The legal battle began four years ago when it was disclosed that Cambridge Analytica obtained the private information of up to 87 million Facebook users.
The California judge overseeing the case has granted preliminary approval of the settlement, and Facebook users can now apply for a cash payment.
Any US Facebook user who had an active account between May 24, 2007, and December 22, 2022, is eligible to be part of the settlement class, including those who have since deleted their accounts.
The claim form can be filled out online or printed and submitted by mail and must be submitted by August 25.Note: Form link is given in last slide.
It's not clear how much each settlement payment will be, but it will be based on how long the user had an active Facebook account during the relevant period.
A final settlement approval hearing is set for September 7, and payments will be distributed after court approval, assuming there are no appeals.
Meta did not admit wrongdoing as part of the settlement, and Facebook has made changes to improve user privacy.
The settlement is in the best interest of Facebook's community and shareholders, according to a Meta spokesperson.
