California is expected to take a vote on Thursday to prohibit the sales of automobiles powered by gasoline in 2035.

"The climate crisis can be resolved when we concentrate on the large, bold actions needed to stop the rising tide of carbon emissions," governor Gavin Newsom said in a statement.

The California Air Resource Board will decide whether to approve the measure on Thursday;

Member Daniel Sperling told reporters that he's "99.9 per cent" confident that the action will be approved. "This is a huge deal," Sperling added.

"This could be the most significant item that CARB has accomplished over the past 30 years.

It's not only important for California; however, it's also important for the nation and the world."

The New York Times noted that at the very least, 12 other states may adopt the new rules shortly, and five states are likely to adopt them within the following year.
