A Robot Has Learned To Imagine Itself - For The First Time In History

Scribbled Arrow

A robot developed in the hands of Columbia Engineers learns to understand itself, not the world surrounding it.

The team at Columbia Engineering revealed today that they'd created a robot that can build an entire model of its body entirely from scratch with no human assistance.

Researchers describe how their robot created the kinematic model of it in a recent article

released in Science Robotics and how it used that model to plan its movements that would achieve goals and overcome obstacles in various situations.

A robot can learn the complete body morphology using visual self-modelling, which allows it to handle various motion-planning and control tasks.

The robot can observe itself as an infant while exploring the mirror-like hall.
