Judge to OpenAI: Remove Cameo Name From Your Sora AI Video App

OpenAI has received a temporary ban on using the term “cameo” for any of its products or features in the Sora app, following a ruling from a federal judge.

The order was issued on Monday by U.S. District Judge Eumi K. Lee, preventing OpenAI from using “cameo” or variations such as “Kameo” and “CameoVideo” in connection with its AI video application.

In response to the lawsuit filed by Cameo in October, OpenAI stated that they do not agree with the claim that anyone can have exclusive rights to the word “cameo.” They expressed their intention to present their case in court.

Cameo, a service that allows users to buy personalized videos from celebrities, initiated legal action after OpenAI introduced a feature in Sora that allowed users to create characters of themselves or others to be included in videos.

Cameo’s CEO, Steven Galanis, expressed satisfaction with the court’s decision, emphasizing the importance of protecting consumers from potential confusion caused by OpenAI’s use of the Cameo trademark.

He noted that while the restraining order is temporary, Cameo hopes that OpenAI will choose to stop using the trademark entirely to prevent further issues for both the public and their company.

The temporary order will remain in effect until December 22, with a hearing set for December 19 to determine if the restriction should become permanent.
