Meta is reportedly developing an AI-driven search engine to reduce its reliance on Google and Microsoft, according to The Information. This search tool would offer AI-generated summaries of recent events directly within the Meta AI chatbot.
Currently, Meta’s AI chatbot on Instagram and Facebook uses Google and Microsoft’s Bing to respond to queries about current news and events. Alphabet, Google’s parent company, is set to release its quarterly earnings tomorrow.
This may soon shift, as Meta’s web crawler was observed gathering data across the internet months ago. According to The Information, a dedicated team has been building an extensive database for the chatbot over the last eight months.
Meta has also been enhancing its location data capabilities, potentially rivaling Google Maps. Additionally, Bloomberg recently reported that Apple’s search advancements in the App Store indicate it “has what it needs” to create its own AI-powered alternative to Google Search.
Last week, Meta announced a multi-year partnership with Reuters, granting its chatbot access to the outlet’s articles for more accurate answers. The Verge reached out to Meta for comment, but no immediate response was provided.
Meanwhile, Perplexity’s AI search engine is under legal scrutiny, facing lawsuits from News Corp and potential legal action from other publishers like The New York Times.
