X, the social network, has currently restricted access to its AI chatbot Grok—developed by Elon Musk’s xAI—only to its premium, paying users. However, it appears that the platform is preparing to expand availability to free users.
Over the weekend, several app researchers and users shared reports of a free version of Grok becoming accessible in select regions. We have confirmed that X is testing Grok access for free users in New Zealand.
A researcher known as Swak on X has reported that there are current usage limits for the free version of Grok: 10 queries every two hours for the Grok-2 model, 20 queries every two hours for the Grok-2 mini model, and three image analysis questions per day.
To access Grok for free, your account must be at least seven days old and linked to a phone number.
xAI introduced Grok-2 in August, featuring image generation capabilities powered by Black Forest Labs’ FLUX.1 model. Last month, the model was updated to include image understanding.
Previously, these features were exclusive to Premium and Premium+ users. By offering Grok to free users, xAI appears to be aiming to expand its user base and accelerate feedback, hoping to better compete with other AI models like ChatGPT, Claude, and Gemini.
