Hollywood Studio’s First Official Partnership With AI Startup Runway

Runway, a startup focused on creating AI-powered video tools, including video-generation models, has joined forces with Lionsgate, the studio known for the “John Wick” and “Twilight” series, to develop a custom video model based on Lionsgate’s film collection.

According to Lionsgate’s vice chair Michael Burns, the studio’s “filmmakers, directors, and creative talent” will be able to utilize the model to “enhance their work.”

Runway is exploring the possibility of offering model licenses that would allow individual creators to develop and train their own customized versions.

This makes the company the first generative AI startup to publicly collaborate with a major Hollywood studio.

While The Wall Street Journal earlier mentioned that Disney and Paramount have engaged in conversations with generative AI companies, these discussions have not yet led to any concrete outcomes.

The partnership between Lionsgate and Runway was announced just one day after California passed legislation limiting the use of AI-generated digital replicas in film and TV productions.

Meanwhile, Runway is also facing a legal challenge accusing the company of using copyrighted materials to train its models without proper authorization.
