Project Strawberry, also known as Q, was recently disclosed in a Reuters report, which stated that it will substantially improve the reasoning abilities of OpenAI’s AI models.

According to the report, “Some at OpenAI believe Q could be a breakthrough in the startup’s pursuit of artificial general intelligence (AGI).”

Project Strawberry explores a novel approach enabling AI models to plan ahead and navigate the internet autonomously to conduct in-depth research.

This advancement could address current limitations in AI reasoning, such as common sense problems and logical fallacies, which often lead to inaccurate outputs.

According to an AI Insider known as Jimmy Apples, the Q* model has not been released yet as OpenAI is not satisfied with the latency and other minor aspects they wish to further optimize.

OpenAI is working on Strawberry to enhance their models’ capability to perform long-term tasks that require planning and executing a series of actions over an extended period.

The project involves a specialized “post-training” phase to adapt the base models for improved performance. This approach is similar to Stanford’s 2022 “Self-Taught Reasoner” (STaR), which allows AI to iteratively create its own training data to reach higher levels of intelligence.
