OpenAI has launched “GPT-4o mini,” a new AI model aimed at broadening the reach of its popular chatbot.
The company touts this release as “the most capable and cost-effective small model currently available,” with plans to later incorporate image, video, and audio capabilities.
Derived from OpenAI’s powerful GPT-4o model, which debuted in May, the mini AI model is a more compact version.
GPT-4o, known for its enhanced audio, video, and text capabilities and multilingual support, was introduced during a live streamed event.
The newly announced mini AI model on Thursday is a part of OpenAI’s initiative to lead in “multimodality,” which involves offering a wide range of AI-generated media, such as text, images, audio, and video, within a single tool: ChatGPT.
OpenAI’s Chief Operating Officer, Brad Lightcap, emphasized the importance of multimodality, stating that the world is much more than just text and code, and that humans engage with the world through various senses.
The GPT-4o mini will be accessible to free users of ChatGPT, as well as ChatGPT Plus and Team subscribers starting Thursday, and will be available to ChatGPT Enterprise users next week. This was announced in a press release by the company.
