Tumblr Is Launching A Livestreaming Feature

Tumblr now supports live streaming via Livebox, the video platform. This feature is available to US users on iOS, Android, and the desktop site. A release for global users is planned for the future.

A blog post that refers to the service Tumblr live provides more details. Tumblr supported streaming in the past by allowing people to share streams from other services such as YouTube and YouNow. Livebox describes this new option as a native Tumblr streaming platform.

The Meet Group, a dating app ParshipMeet Group subsidiary, manages Livebox. Livebox lets users tip streamers. Tumblr allows you to pay creators with a virtual currency called “Diamonds.”

According to a press release, Livebox offers AI- and human-powered moderation of streams. The service allows streamers to designate trusted viewers to act as moderators.

The streaming service is currently only available for the primary Tumblr blog. It does not support other blogs that are part of the same account. Automattic, the owner of Tumblr, is trying to revive the blogging platform it bought from Verizon in 2019.

Tumblr has seen the benefits of Twitter’s recent chaos and emerged as an alternative to Elon Musk’s chaotic policies. Although it is unlikely to surpass YouTube or Twitch, its streaming feature adds another medium and means artists can make more money.
